As some of you may be aware, the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into force on May 25th, 2018 in the UK.
GDPR sets out the new European framework for data protection. It is a replacement of the current data protection laws, set almost twenty years ago, and is concerned with how personal data is obtained, used, handled and stored.
As part of the build-up to this I am starting to implement these changes in the next few months to ensure I am fully compliant by May 2018. It is important to me that I follow to new guidelines to ensure all my clients are covered under the new legislation.
What is classed as ‘data’?
To clarify, personal ‘data’ is classed as any information that could be used to identify an individual; that could mean an email address, a name, a date of birth, a postal address, a national insurance number or a bank account number, for example. Photographs are also considered ‘data’.
As a business which collects personal data – in the form of names and email addresses when you become a client and then in the form of photos I’ve created, I am effectively a ‘Data Collector’. And as such, I have a responsibility to ensure that you are compliant with data protection law.
How your data will be stored is also part of this, and I have to and will ensure that all data is stored securely (and full encrypted) I will make sure I review this regularly and delete personal data which is no longer relevant.
How I obtain your personal data, what you are I am using it for and how I will store Is a key part of this. As well as needing your written permissions to take your photograph, store them and share them with you. So, going forward I have launched a new online contract to ensure this is clear and transparent for my clients. If you have a session with in the next new few months, keep your eyes peeled for an email with your contract link (it’s an easy online form, because I’m nice like that !!).
